S2 / S3 - Uddingston Grammar v Bellshill Academy

Respectme Saltire Schools Rugby League Tournament
S2/S3 West Division - Round 1
Monday 28th November 2011 - Hamilton Palace Grounds
Uddingston Grammar v Bellshill Academy
Last year's West of Scotland Champions and National semi finalists Uddingston Grammar hosted the start of their 2011/12 Respectme Saltire Schools Rugby League Tournament campaign with a visit by Bellshill Academy.
Bellshill started the game with a long kick down the middle of the pitch, Uddingston gathered the ball with ease and passed the ball to the left wing for Andrew Bryce to sprint pass a disorganised Academy defence to score under the posts within the first minute of the game starting..
Bellshill started with a similar kick off and Uddingston looked to score a similar try, only a tighter defence saw Grammar resort to carrying the ball to the line and execute some great offloads allowing Graham Blake the final opportunity to side step his opposite man and score just right of the uprights.
Having conceded two early try's Bellshill regrouped and forced Uddingston to knock on within 20 metres of their line following a quick chase from the Academy players. The resulting scrum Bellshill took the ball forward for two plays before Mark Williams darted from dummy half to open their scoring.
The first half continued to be dominated by Uddingston with Andrew Brice scoring his second and David Haddow and Gavin Kidd crossing the line. Bellshill were to have the last say in the first half's scoring when Mark Williams dived over for his second giving the North Lanarkshire outfit a boost on the stroke of half time.
Half time: Uddingston Grammar 20 Bellshill Academy 8
The second half proved to be a totally different story, though Grammars David Haddow opened the second half with a great individual effort having breached Bellshill's defence, but it wasn't going to be all Uddingston.
The Academy squad had obviously gathered their composure during the half time talk and responded to the opening Uddingston try with three of their own, following poor handling and good defensive pressure forcing Grammar to make some handling errors allowing Bellshill to capitalise on the mistakes. Craig Gibson ran in all three bringing them to within a try of Grammar
Andrew Brice put Bellshill's hopes of drawing the game down when he broke the line to race twenty metres down the field to score his third allowing Uddingston a well deserved win to a very tough contest.
Final Score: Uddingston Grammar 28 Bellshill Academy 20
S2 / S3 - Aberdeen Grammar v Westhill Academy

Respectme Saltire Schools Rugby League Tournament
S2/S3 North East Division – Round 1
Wednesday 23rd November 2011 – Aberdeen Grammar School
Aberdeen Grammar started the defence of their 2011/12 Respectme Saltire Schools Rugby League Tournament by hosting last year’s finalists Westhill Academy in the first round of the S2/S3 North East Division of the competition.
Westhill started the game kicking long but Grammar looked strong from the start with four quick try’s from the kick off and resulting restarts. James Madox opened the scoring followed by Kieran Riley and Grant Davis and Sam Garioch. Alex Morrison only managed to kick one conversion leaving the visitors somewhat shell shocked at 18 – 0 with only 7 minutes of the game played.
Westhill found their feet and started to defend, the ball turning over on numerous occasions however Grammar managed to stave any Westhill attention to score a further try with an 80 metre run by James Madox. Morrison added the extras.
No further points were scored in the first half as Westhill defended hard but were unable to cross the Grammar line.
Half Time: Aberdeen Grammar 24 Westhill Academy 0
Aberdeen started the second half with a similar kick to that of Westhill. Westhill drove forward and quick play the balls put Aberdeen under pressure forcing a penalty against the hosts fifteen metres from their try line for offside. Westhill attacked again with the same vigour forcing yet another penalty five metres from the Grammar line for the same offence. Quick thinking from Scott McNeil saw him drive over his opponents line to score Westhills first points. McNeil converted his own try.
The game restarted with a high pressure kick by Grammar forcing the receiving player to spill the ball forward only for Cameron Brock from Aberdeen to pounce on the error and run over Westhills try line. Alex Morrison failed to convert.
Westhill restarted with a short kick which was quickly gathered by the chasing team, quick hands and some direct running saw Angus Grindlay break through his opponents line to score under the posts. Westhill failed to convert the try bring them to within 18 points of Grammar at 28 points to 10.
Aberdeen responded with a flurry of 4 trys from Kieran Riley, George Mitchell, Alex Morrison and Cameron Brock. Alex Morrison Converted 3 and George Mitchell his own try putting the game well beyond Westhill.
Westhill came back in the dying minute of the game with Euan Grindlay crossing and Euan Smith converting.
Final score: Aberdeen Grammar 50 Westhill Academy 16
