A fantastic crowd turned out to Hartree Mill Sports Ground, in what would be Scotland u16s only competitive home game of the season.

Scotland were in good spirits, buoyed by a strong performance against England, while Wales arrived looking to continue their impressive run and claim a third consecutive tournament victory.

It was Wales who struck first, catching the Scottish defence cold with some slick passing that sent Matthew Clatworthy in under the posts inside two minutes. Clatworthy added the conversion to give the visitors an early 6-0 lead.

Scotland responded well to the setback, gaining ground with powerful carries and tenacious defence that pinned Wales back. Their pressure paid off when full back Connor McGuinness sliced through the defensive line to score a superb solo try. Tom Glover slotted the conversion to level the scores at 6-6.

However, momentum swung back to Wales when a Scotland handling error gifted them a scrum. From the base, Elis Thomas powered over for a try, which Clatworthy converted to restore the Welsh advantage at 12-6.

Both sides showcased strong attacking and defensive discipline, but it was Wales who would close out the first half on top. Expecting a kick on the last tackle, Scotland were caught off guard as Wales ran the ball from deep, resulting in a breakaway try for Evan Williams. Clatworthy maintained his perfect kicking record to take the score to 18-6 at the break.

Half Time: Scotland 6 – 18 Wales

The second half began with Scotland threatening close to the Welsh line, but a wayward pass was intercepted and Harry Wrigglesworth sprinted the length of the field for a stunning try. Another touchline conversion from Clatworthy made it 24-6.

Despite the growing deficit, Scotland showed heart and determination. Their relentless defence forced a knock-on, and McGuinness was quickest to react, scooping up the loose ball and racing 80 metres for his second try. Glover’s conversion cut the deficit to 24-12.

As temperatures soared, both teams showed remarkable stamina and spirit, but Wales extended their lead with two rapid tries from Tyler Mills and Elis Thomas. With another conversion added, the scoreline stretched to 34-12.

Scotland struck back immediately with a moment of brilliance straight from the restart. A pinpoint kick from Glover found Will Barber, who stepped past the Welsh full-back to score under the posts. Glover’s conversion made it 34-18.

With the game entering its final stages, Scotland pressed hard, showcasing their defensive grit and attacking flair. However, Wales had the final say, with Charlie Eatly crossing in the last minute. Clatworthy converted to seal a 40-18 win.

Full Time: Scotland 18 – 40 Wales

Though the scoreboard favoured Wales, the Bravehearts can be immensely proud of their performance, matching the reigning champions for large periods of the game and showing great resilience and quality throughout.
