Dobson announced as Trinity Wheelchair RL Head Coach

Scotland Wheelchair Rugby League International #17 Gavin Dobson has been announced as Wakefield Trinity Wheelchair RL Head Coach

Wakefield Trinity Community Foundation announced Dobson as their first-ever Wheelchair Rugby League Head Coach.

Bringing in a wealth of experience within the Wheelchair game, Dobson has been trusted to lead the Foundation’s side ahead of this year’s World Cup.

After discovering the game through a YouTube video in 2011, Dobson enjoyed a glittering playing career at Halifax, where he won the League Leaders’ Shield, Grand Final and Challenge Cup within a few very successful seasons with the Panthers.

Through his successful club career, Dobson also appeared on the international stage, representing Scotland at the 2014 Four Nations and the 2017 Wheelchair Rugby World Cup in France.

Following the Foundation’s successful application through the Rugby World Cup’s #CreatedBy grant late last year, Dobson heard of the side through the local community and was instantly excited.

Despite all his success coming on the court, he wanted to partner his ball-in-hand skills with a career in coaching and is looking forward to his coaching role with the Foundation.

“Initially I got word from someone who was involved with the Community Foundation and had an association with Wakefield Harriers Athletics Club where my Dad was a coach

“I then went to Wakefield Trinity Disability Rugby League 2018 season launch and spoke to Craig Shepherd who said work was still being progressed on the Wheelchair team.

“After the Community Foundation had secured funding from Created by RLWC 2021, that then paved the way to the recent announcement of the official launch.”

With a Wheelchair tournament on the horizon, Dobson is keen to make his mark within the coaching industry and would like to utilise his knowledge to build a lasting effect.

“First of all, I would be aiming to establish a diverse mix of experience, adult, youth and Armed Forces Veterans to play within a development league structure

“I would look to build consistency and belief as well as instilling my knowledge of the game, using the experience gained and philosophies learnt from both club and country.”
